Why Patients Might Not Be Finding Your Practice Anymore

There’s a new first stop in the patient journey, and for a lot of practices, it’s happening without them ever knowing it.

Are Your Patients Even Using Google Anymore?

More often, they’re not. A growing share of people now rely on AI tools instead of a traditional search engine when they have a health question. Most healthcare-related searches today trigger an AI-generated answer instead of a list of websites, and more than half of patients say they’d rather ask an AI tool first. That’s a different starting line than the one most practices are marketing to.

What Happens When an AI Tool Answers the Question Instead of You?

A patient asks a health question. The AI tool gives them an answer, sometimes with a provider recommendation built in. Roughly half of the questions patients used to click through to your website for are now being answered before they ever leave the chat. If your practice isn’t part of that answer, that patient may already be booked somewhere else, and you’ll never know they considered you at all. This shift has a name: answer engine optimization, or AEO, and it works differently than the SEO most practices are used to.

Why Would AI Choose One Practice Over Another?

The same way a person would: it looks for a clear, direct answer, written by someone credible, and kept up to date. Content that answers the question right away, rather than burying it under three paragraphs of introduction, gets picked up far more often. So does content that’s been updated recently. A page that hasn’t been touched in a couple of years is easy for both patients and AI tools to skip past.

What Can You Actually Do About It?

If you want to show up in AI search, start with the questions patients are actually asking, and make sure your website answers them clearly, near the top of the page, not buried at the bottom. Keep your information current. Make it obvious who’s behind the content: a name, a credential, a reason to trust it.

None of this requires new technology. It requires treating your website like it’s the first conversation a patient has with your practice, because increasingly, it is.

Why This Can’t Wait

The practices already doing this are the ones showing up in these AI-driven answers today. And the leads coming through that channel are converting at a much higher rate than the ones coming through a traditional search, because the patient has already done their research by the time they reach out. Waiting to see how this plays out just means watching competitors get chosen first.
